6:50 p.m. The Senate adjourned and will reconvene at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. They will resume consideration of the nomination of Shalanda Young to be Deputy Director of OMB. The Senate will vote on cloture on the Young nomination at 11:45 a.m. Following the vote they will recess until 2:15 for weekly party lunches. Further votes on the Young nomination and also on the nomination of Vivek Murthy to be the Surgeon General will occur during Tuesday’s session.

6:20 p.m. Senator Portman spoke about the border crisis.

6:18 p.m. By a vote of 68-29 the Senate confirmed Martin Walsh to be Secretary of Labor. Senators not voting: Blackburn, Murkowski, and Toomey.

5:17 p.m. Senator Burr spoke about the Walsh nomination.

4:50 p.m. Senator Cornyn spoke about immigration and the conditions at the border.

4:33 p.m. Senator Grassley spoke about the false claims act.

4:16 p.m. Senator Collins spoke about her higher education bills.

4:00 p.m. Senator Brown spoke about the Walsh nomination.

3:37 p.m. Senator Durbin spoke about the work for the Judiciary Committee and also about the filibuster.

3:24 p.m. Senator Schumer spoke about the new Sergeant at Arms leadership and about the Walsh nomination.

3:23 p.m. The following resolutions were agreed to by unanimous consent:

  • S. Res. 127-Karen Gibson to be Sergeant at Arms for the Senate
  • S. Res. 128-Notifying the House of the election of the SAA
  • S. Res. 129-Notifying the President of the election of the SAA
